One of the biggest misconceptions about human hair extensions is that once you get them installed, that’s it. Nope. The REAL secret to expensive-looking extensions lies in the at-home maintenance. If you don’t take care of them properly, they’ll start feeling dry, tangled, waxy, or matted way faster than they should.
Here’s some of my real-life extension rules after years of wearing them myself and installing them on clients.
1. Wash Gently, But Thoroughly
Use sulfate-free, salon-quality shampoo and conditioner ONLY. Cheap drugstore products leave behind a ton of buildup, silicones, and waxy residue that will absolutely ruin your extensions over time.
And please wash in between the rows/beads. That’s where buildup hides.
Personally, I always shampoo twice because the first wash removes the grime and the second actually cleans the hair. Once my hair is fully clean, I can usually go about 2 days before washing again. Overwashing dries out both your scalp and the extensions.
2. Clarity And Deep Condition Weekly/Biweekly
Since extensions aren’t attached to your scalp, they don’t receive natural oils like your real hair, making hydration EVERYTHING.
Use a quality conditioner or hair mask weekly to keep them soft, silky, and manageable. Also make sure it doesn’t contain protein. If your extensions suddenly feel waxy, stiff, rough and tangled despite brushing… it’s usually product buildup or cheap haircare products causing it. The trick no one tells you, is how important clarifying your hair every week or biweekly is. You want a gentle detoxifying shampoo that won’t strip the hair- I’ve tried quite a few and my favorite is Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Oil Rinse, hands down. Just wet your hair in the shower (really let it soak up the water first), then apply this product in sections from roots to ends. It will INSTANTLY feel silky, but leave it on a few minutes, combing it through with your fingers, then rinse and condition. If you want it extra clean like me- shampoo before conditioning. A budget-friendly but highly effective drugstore shampoo like Kristin Ess’ “The One”, it does the work of a professional product without the hefty price tag. As for conditioners, it all depends on your hair type. But one all-around favorite is Pureology’s Hydrate Conditioner. It has amazing reviews for a reason, and their Hydrate shampoo is one you can use everyday also.
3. Heat Is NOT Your Friend
The less heat you use, the longer your extensions will stay beautiful. Period. But if you MUST, ALWAYS use a heat protectant, keep the temperature of your hot tools low and stop frying them at 450 degrees like it’s 2014. Your extensions will thank you by lasting so much longer, I promise.
4. Detangle Like You Love Your Hair
One of the fastest ways to destroy extensions is aggressively brushing through them dry and tangled. Instead, I always recommend applying a quality leave-in conditioner followed by a lightweight oil like Moroccan Oil. Run the products through with your fingers first, THEN gently detangle starting from the ends and working upward. If you start yanking from the root down, congratulations… now you’re in a fight with your own head, AND causing breakage.
5. Air Dry Whenever Possible
I almost never blow dry my extensions because they stay softer and last SO much longer without constant heat exposure. BUT- and this is important- NEVER go to sleep with wet extensions. EVER.Depending on how much you move in your sleep, they can matte up insanely fast. The best thing I’ve found is sleeping with your hair in a loose braid. It keeps everything softer, smoother, and way less tangled overnight.
6. Brush Them Throughout the Day
Extensions need more brushing than natural hair, so do it periodically during the day. Use a quality paddle brush and gently brush while the hair is dry to prevent tangling and matting. Always start at the ends and work your way upward. This alone makes a massive difference in how long they stay looking fresh.
7. Trim the Ends
Yes, extensions need trims too. Split ends don’t magically stop splitting just because the hair is expensive. Once the ends start splitting, it travels upward and the hair starts looking thin and fried. Tiny maintenance trims keep them looking full, healthy, and expensive longer.
At the end of the day, extensions are an investment. And honestly? The installation is only half of it. Proper maintenance is what keeps them looking expensive while also protecting your REAL hair underneath so it can stay healthy and grow.
Protect your investment, ladies.
